Who Do You Trust?

We are in a world of TMI – Too Much Information. We are bombarded daily, and even hourly by “experts” giving advice on-line, through blogs, on the radio, in advice columns and from well-meaning friends or relatives. How do you decide what information is real, and what is not? How do you know who is a real expert, and who is a self-proclaimed expert? And are all real experts equal?

It seems there are as many pet care experts as there are pet owners – millions.  But the depth of knowledge for most of them is paper-thin. Last year I talked to a young man who decided he wanted to be a dog trainer, so he read some books and went to a seminar. He doesn’t own his own dog, and has never trained a dog himself, but he wants to give other people advice about how to train ther dogs. I hope I am not the only person who thinks this young man needs to keep his day job until he gets a lot more practical, hands-on experience in training a real dog before he starts handing out advice. to others

Sadly, the pet industry is full of people who have little or no experience raising and training dogs, who now want to tell everyone else what to do with their dogs.  So how can you tell the difference?  How do you know who to trust?

The first clue is in the number of dogs owned and trained by the “expert.” If they have trained only one or two dogs, they do not have enough experience to be providing insight into anyone elses’ problems. Period.

Look for people in the pet care industry who have a proven track record of working successfully with pets.  There are fewer than you think! And usually you will find them through organized dog clubs, training clubs, or in businesses that have been around for a long time – like Cedar Creek Pet Resort! We know your pet is like a member of your family, and we know that just like human families, sometimes there are arguments and challenges that need to be worked through.
